Submarine Tunnels
One of the best hidden attractions in the Bay of Kotor are the submarine tunnels near the village of Rose. There are 3 submarine tunnels in the Bay and they are worth to see. The tunnels are fascinating piece of military heritage, and they are also a great place for swimming and snorkeling.
All along the entrance coast of Boka Bay, there are many submarine tunnels built to hide submarines during World War 2 and after. Our skipper drove into one of the tunnels, just to show us how it was like, and it was really impressive.
– Timothée Boissonade, France
Built during the 1970s by the Yugoslav Navy, these tunnels were designed to provide cover for small submarines and even smaller ships. The entrance features an interesting construction which is covered with fake rocks. It is designed to make the the tunnels invisible from the outside and make it seem lika its a part of the shore. Parts of these constructions are movable so when the enemies are getting close by, the soldiers would rotate them and almost completly cover the entrance with these fake rocks.
These three tunnels are within few kilometers apart from each other, with the furthest located at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. The tunnels are long from 60-100 meters and wide 3-8 meters depending on which of these three tunels you want to explore.
