Our Lady of the Rocks
If you look from Perast to the Bay of Kotor, you will see two islets that seem to float on the sea surface, acting unreal even to those who have seen them before, Our Lady of the Rocks and the islet of St. George.
Our Lady of the Rocks is the biggest unavoidable tourist attraction for every tourist who visits Boka. This is the most important shrine of the Bay of Kotor. Next to the island of St. George, there is an artificially made islet, made on a cliff that was located in the same place, at the end of the fifteenth century. While the Catholic Church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rocks, built on this islet in 1630.
It is certainly one of the most beautiful scenes in the world, watching the unreal blue reflected in the transparency of the clear waters of the Bay of Kotor, embraced by the white slopes of dry stone, and like two rare pearls in a shell, out of nowhere two imaginatively beautiful islets emerge Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George.
– Mathias Goetzel, Austria
Legend has it that on July 22, 1452, sailors found an icon of the Mother of God with a child, on a rock in the middle of the sea. Since that day, there has been a tradition that sailors, after returning from a successful voyage, lay stones along the shore of Our Lady of the Rocks. This man-made islet has been built for centuries. Its foundations in the depths of the bay are hidden by hundreds of worn-out sailing ships, which were filled with stone and sunk, so that the island could still stand above the water.
Inside the museum, it is possible to see numerous historical objects from different epochs, which were donated to the islet. Amphoras from the second century BC, weapons from the 18th and 19th centuries, over 250 paintings of boats and sailing ships that throughout history were called Our Lady of the Rocks. There are over 2000 silver votive tablets, which are hung on the walls of the church. Votive tablets have been brought to the church since the 17th century, and are a gift from sailors who survived a shipwreck or an accident at sea. The dome of the church, the so-called The Marian cycle is the work of the famous baroque painter Tripo Kokolja from the 18th century. Popularly called the Sistine Chapel of Boka, because it was built on the same principle as the dome in the Vatican.
